The new Weißseejoch gondola will significantly improve the range of comfortable lifts and new slopes in the glacier ski area.
The new 10-passenger “Weißseejochbahn” gondola will be the centre’s third to head up to the Italian border (the other two, Karlesjochbahn, Falginjochbahn, providing different perspectives). Although there are no ski runs over the border, other than freeriding routes, there is a mountain hut just on the Italian side where you can enjoy an authentic Italian coffee.
A special full-day package is available for freeriders which include lift ticket, a guide, lunch, transport back to the Kaunertal (by bus or taxi) after the last ride of the day which takes participants down into Italy’s South Tyrol.
The lift will feature Leitner’s Diamond EVO cabins with panoramic glazing and comfortable leather seats. The lift has been designed to require a minimal base building by a clever design to maximise available space for ‘parking’ the gondola cabins when not in use.
The Weißseejochbahn will be ‘almost’ self-sufficient in green energy through an integral solar power system. The lift will only operate during the winter season but will be generating solar power year-round – creating almost as much power in total over 12 months as it needs during its operational period each year.
Weißseejoch gondola technical details:
Driving speed: 6 m / s
Driving time: 5 min 45 sec
33 cabins
12 supports
550 meters in altitude

New station building
The buildings of the valley and mountain stations were planned in such a way that they can be kept as small as possible and thus integrate perfectly into the surrounding mountains.
Another novelty is that the gondolas are garaged one above the other in the valley station. This means that no additional building is required for the garage of the gondolas.
The mountain station of the Weißseejochbahn is located at 3,044 m. The state border between Austria and Italy runs directly on the ridge.
This means that superlative border-hopping will be possible on the Kaunertal Glacier from the coming winter. The gondola takes you directly to the Italian border three times. And the best thing about it: You can marvel at a completely new and unique mountain panorama on all 3 lifts.
Winter season at the Kaunertal Glacier from 25 September 2021 til 05 June 2022
